I thought I would have to stop winter hiking/mountaineering due to the painfully stiff boots required in winter alpine conditions. These little sleeves with a gel patch saved my hobby from a painful early demise. Apparently I have "Haglund's Deformity" (self-diagnosed via internet research), a big boney bump on back of the ankle, and it hurt unbearably to walk uphill wearing stiff mountaineering boots. Thought i'd have to choose between surgery and quitting altogether (heartbreak!).These make all the difference. The gel padding relieves the pressure of the bone against the back of the boot when I'm climbing. Bonus: No more blisters in the heel/ankle areas either! An enormous thank you to the inventor of this thing. My only complaint is they don't stay in place all that well. They tend to shift down so that pretty soon my heel is stepping on the bottom of the gel patch. Even so, they still eliminate the pain so I am happy. If the fit/elasticity could be improved (maybe S-M-L sizes instead of just S/M and M/L), that'd perfect it.I ordered another pair already as backup. I tell all my hiking buddies about them.
